You’ve probably already played something in your lifetime, so stop and think about the game that most caught your eye. What made the impression? The characters? The story? The setting? When creating any game, every detail needs to be well thought out and taken into account so that the game is interesting and attractive to the public. <\/p>\n

The person responsible for the entire creative process is the game designer. But what exactly does this professional do? That’s what we’re going to talk about today! <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

What does a game designer do?<\/em><\/h2>\n

The game designer has several roles: he or she is responsible for the plot of the story, the characters, the aesthetics, the mechanics and the programming. The various areas involved in designing a game. <\/p>\n

First of all, you need to define the genre and mechanics of the game. Is it an action, adventure or horror game? Will the platform be open-world, infinite run? There are many possibilities and this is the starting point for building the game. <\/p>\n

There are many details to consider. For example, if the game has several levels, how difficult will each one be? How will the player get from one level to the next? What will the obstacles be? What will the scoring system be? <\/p>\n

As for the graphics, they can be 2D or 3D, depending on the style the designer wants to adopt. The type of drawing is also important: if the designer opts for a realistic look, the game will have a very different vibe from something more cartoony. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Then there’s the sound. The music and sounds present in the game have a relevant function: they help set the tone. A cheerful sound gives the idea of a livelier game; darker music can be used in a horror or suspense game to contribute to the atmosphere of tension. <\/p>\n

The game designer must also work on the script, developing the story, characters, dialog, scenes, hints, rules and all the written and visual parts of the game that relate to the plot. <\/p>\n

Obviously, programming is part of the process. It’s the stage that turns everything that has been conceived into reality. Without programming, there is no game. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Within all this, it’s up to the designer to understand the reason behind each of his decisions. This means that he needs to know what he intends to do with everything he has created. Each element needs to be in the right place, at the right time, for a reason, with a purpose in mind. Even the color palette is responsible for conveying the message. <\/p>\n

It’s not a simple task because it involves understanding what the player expects from the game. It needs to be good enough for the player to come back and want to keep playing. The experience has to be fun and exciting and, for this to happen, the designer needs to have the sensitivity to study the game they are creating in depth, with all the particularities relating to it. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Last of Us<\/h3>\n

The Last of Us is an example that can help us visualize how good storytelling makes a game so famous and acclaimed. Players accompany Ellie and Joel in a post-apocalyptic world. The entire setting is created to reflect this chaotic environment: abandoned places and objects, ruins, dead bodies, and the possibility of monsters and enemies appearing at any moment. The tension is constant during the gameplay. <\/p>\n

Joel’s relationship with Ellie is an extremely important point for the game. It evolves into a father-daughter relationship, and this is crucial to understanding the characters and their actions. The plot is well developed and makes the player want to stay in the game to follow (and participate in!) the story as it unfolds. <\/p>\n

The interactions are very realistic, which contributes to the air of apprehension. Speech, body language and even the sounds emitted by the characters (such as a groan of pain or a shout to warn of danger) resemble how a person would act in that situation, making the player feel like they are actually living in the moment. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Horizon Zero Dawn is another game with a post-apocalyptic theme, but as an RPG. In this narrative, machines have taken over and human society no longer has access to technology, which has caused a drastic change in the way humans live. <\/p>\n

The player experiences the game through the eyes of Aloy, the protagonist, an orphan who was exiled as soon as she came into the world. The focus is on exploring the idealized environment, which is why the open world was used, to provide the freedom to investigate and learn. You can wander around the locations and get to know that universe – the beauty of nature in counterpoint to the primitiveness of the situation brings you back to past times, even though the story is set in the future. <\/p>\n

Therefore, the game can be seen from two points of view: as a story with a beginning, middle and end, with characters and a protagonist; on the other hand, there is the playful factor of making the process playable, creating the possibility of choices within a pre-established pattern. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
